Grand-Daughter

Biography:

My name is Amy Arif and I was born in Cairo in 1986. I went to school at the
German School in Babellouk and graduated in 2004 before beginning my studies
in art at the American University in Cairo. I also studied art education in
Nuremberg, Germany from the fall of 2005 to the summer of 2006, returning to
AUC afterwards. I should graduate in the fall of 2008.

Artist Statement:

I am very interested in everything that can be conveyed in abstract lines. I have
consciously avoided anything figurative because I have found this sometimes too
limiting, and that is why I experiment with lines to give expression to things.

There are certain states, be they mental, emotional or physical, which evade
definition. These states cannot be depicted by figurative drawing, whether
symbolic or naturalistic, and instead I find myself resorting to an abstraction of line
with a powerful physicality in the act of drawing itself, which until now has been my
point of access to such conditions.

I am intrigued by how certain states of being resist depiction, words often fall short
and other means of representation lack the breath sufficient to justly characterize
them. A degree of abstraction is fitting as the resulting images are unclear as the
states of being from which they arise. In this way there is more space for personal
interpretation.

I was honored, in May 2007, to received the AUC 'First Jurors' Award for Art'.

. درست في المدرسة الألمانية بباب 1986اسمي إيمى عريف وولدت في القاهرة سنة
قبل أن ألتحق بقسم الفنون بالجامعة 2004وسوف بالقاهرة. اللوق و تخرجت منها سنة
أتخرج من تخللت دراستي بالجامعة الأمريكية دراسة تعليم الفن في نيورمبرج الأمريكية
الجامعة الأمريكية بمشيئة الله في 2006 إلى صيف 2005خريف المنيا من
2008خريف .

كلمـــــــــة الفنانة:

مهتـــمة أنا بكل ما يعبر عنه بالخطوط التجريدية. لقد تحاشيت, بوعــي كامل الرسم
بالوسائل التشخيصية لأني وجدتها محددة للغاية, ولذلك أطوع الخطوط لتضفى التعبيرات
للأشياء. هـــناك أمور؛ عقلانية كانت أو شعورية أو مادية تخف عن التعريف ويفل
وصفها بالرسم التشخيصي, سواء كان رمزيا أو واقعيا. لذالك, أجــد نفسي ألجأ, بهيمنة
مادية, للخيال الخطى لتطويع الأشكال. وكانت هذه هي وسـيلة لحاقي واختراقي لتلك
الأمور إلى الآن.

أكترث كيف أن بعض الأمور تقاوم الوصف وكيف تقف الكلمات أحيانا عاجزة عن نقل
المشاعر وأن تبيت وسائل تعبيرية أخرى حائرة أمام المقدرة عن التعبير الصادق. لذلك
أجد أن قدر من التجريد يتناســـب مع قلة وضوح الأمور التي تنتج عنها الصور ويمنح
مجال أوسع للتعبير الذاتــــي.
